Hills Like White Elephants written by Ernest Hemingway, is a story about a man and a girl. It is a conversation between the two as they wait for a train. The details are sparse but you can tell they are having an argument about something, and must make a decision that will change their lives forever.
Does she stay in her relationship with the man? I believe she does stay in her relationship with the man. Throughout their conversation, you can tell she loves him and would do anything for him. She is willing to go through the operation to save their relationship and make everything as it once was. While the reason for their argument is never made clear, it was very easy for me to figure out their troubles, as I have had an all to similar argument in my life. The girl seems to doubt that the operation is the right thing to do, however, she will do it for the man because she loves him. When have you made an important choice to stay in or leave a relationship? For the past 5 years I have made the decision to stay in a "relationship". I use the term relationship loosely as it's as complicated as a relationship could possibly be. It has been 5 years of pain and hurt, but it has also been 5 years of pure happiness at the same time, I can't explain it. We are each others best friends and have been through hell and back together. Our relationship definitely isn't a normal one, that is for sure. No one understands it, and to be honest, I don't blame them. I have hope for us and the future and my choice to stay. I guess only time will tell if I made the right one.. "What You Don't Know" by Lulu Wang, is about a family that learns of their grandmother's stage 4 lung cancer and their decision to lie and keep it a secret.
Did you agree with the family's choice to deceive Wang's grandmother? This was hard for me to decide. If it was my grandmother, I wouldn't want to be the one to tell her she was dying. I wouldn't really want anyone to. I would want her to continue to be happy and live her life for as long as she could with out worry. Wang's grandmother out-lived her 3 month life expectancy, and if she knew about her diagnosis, maybe she wouldn't have. I personally think the fear of dying takes a toll on someone, and the fact that Wang's family lied in some way saved her. That being said, if I was dying I would want to know. I would want to know every little detail, but that is because I am a control freak. I think her family made the right choice, as controversial as it was. This post is about challenging authority and overcoming oppression. "My Name is Margaret" by Maya Angelou is about a girl named Margaret, who decided to challenge an authority figure in her life after being disrespected.
I do agree with Margaret's decision to break the casserole dish and two green glasses. Margaret felt rightfully disrespected by Mrs. Cullinan for calling her Mary, even though she knew her real name. Margaret even felt bad for Mrs. Cullinan at one point due to her inability to have children. So the fact the she called Margaret out of name upset her. I think breaking the dishes was Margaret's way of telling Mrs. Cullinan that she was a real person, not a piece of property and she wouldn't stand for being disrespected the way she was. She stood up for herself, and was probably the only employee to ever stand up for themselves. Miss Glory had began working there 20 years before and Mrs. Cullinan called her by the wrong name as well, and it stuck. I feel as though Margaret was scared it would happen to her as well, so she stood up for herself and demanded the respect she deserved. In my life, I always find myself challenging authority when I think I should. If I am being disrespected or being treated in a way I don't see fit, I will always stand up for myself. Whether it be to a co-worker, friend, or any person of authority. I don't believe that any one person is better than another, so if there is ever a time someone treats me as "less than", I will always challenge that. I have chosen quotes from the texts linked down below that i find interesting and that I find very relatable. I have also provided my own quotes that describe my own writing process.
Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Witing and Life (Anne Lamott) "Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way." "Very few writers really know what they are doing until they do it." "Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts." The Daily Writing Routines of Great Writers (Maria Popova) "I never listen to music when I'm working. I haven't that kind of attentiveness, and I wouldn't like it at all."- E.B. White "I write when I have to because the pressure builds up and I feel enough confidence that something has matured in my head and I can write it down."- Susan Sontag "And more often than not if I've done nine pages i maybe able to save two and a half or three."- Maya Angelou Teach Writing as Process Not a Product (Don Murray) "The writing process itself can be divided into three stages: pre-writing, writing, and re-writing." "The student should have the opportunity to write all the drafts necessary for him to discover what he has to say on this particular subject." "There are no rules, no absolutes, just alternatives." My own writing process: "I have to write in complete silence. No music, no TV, no one talking around me. I am easily distracted and silence is the only way to keep me focused." "I take frequent breaks to keep my mind fresh." "I dont force myslef to write. If nothing comes to me, I don't do it. I wait for the right words to find me." 1.
